1. Join SOME on Thanksgiving Day
Are you looking to give back to the community on Thanksgiving? Join us for the 6th Annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger. If you haven’t attended the Trot for Hunger before, it’s a great way for family and friends to get out and fight hunger on Thanksgiving morning. We are proud to have Mayor Adrian Fenty as our Honorary Chair for the event. So let’s get trotting! If you won’t be in town on Thanksgiving, you can support the Trot by making a contribution; you can also designate SOME and join us at the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon on Saturday, November 17. We hope to see you walking, trotting, or running with us in November.

2. Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Health Fair
On September 27, the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses came together with generous corporate sponsors such as Safeway, General Mills, Nike, Walmart, Johnson & Johnson and Kraft to hold their annual Community Breakfast and Health Fair for our clients at SOME. In addition to providing breakfast in our Dining Room for the Homeless, the group worked to coordinate resources for a variety of health screenings, and product donations to give away to our clients. The event was a wonderful opportunity to provide important screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, and other health issues that pose a high risk for the homeless population. Additionally, many clients were able to get a basic eye or dental screening and were referred to the SOME clinics for follow-up treatment.

The Chesapeake building, directly adjacent to Barnaby House will provide 22 two- and three-bedroom apartments for families. The 50th Street building will be reconfigured to create 73 efficiency and Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units, two staff units, a community space and offices.
