1.  We Need Canned Vegetables!

SOME serves over 800 meals to clients every day in our main dining room and through our Central SE Kitchen.  Our meal services would not be possible without canned items from donors such as you!  We are in need of industrial-sized cans of vegetables including beans, carrots, broccoli, green beans, etc.  We would be grateful if you could deliver your donation to the main SOME facility at 71 “O” St., NW.  The SOME truck can be made available to pick up any large donations.  For further information or questions, please contact Brian Bilenki at bbilenki@some.org, 202-797-0701 x. 104 or 202-797-8806 x. 1087.  Thank you for your help!

2.  Striving for Excellence

For 16 years, SOME’s Thea Bowman Family Housing Program has enabled families to build on their strengths and become independent.  The two-year, transitional housing includes intensive social service programs that focus on all aspects of the family’s success.  Last year, at the beginning of the school year, our staff gave the children an academic challenge to strive to do their best throughout the entire school year. On June 28th, the children celebrated their achievements with parents and staff at main SOME where each student was recognized for their individual improvements with a certificate.  Steve Kolbe, President of AnalySYS, presented a new laptop to the highest achieving student who increased her level of success to straight A's, and strongly participated in Thea Bowman’s enrichment programs.  In addition to donating the laptop, AnalySYS provides quality information technology services to all of SOME’s programs.  Congratulations students!

3.  Father John Adams and SOME honored with the Salmon Award

Salmon Award

Father John Adams is given the 2007 Salmon Award by DCPCA Executive Director, Sharon Baskerville

Father John Adams, President of SOME, received the Salmon Award at the Primary Care Association’s (DCPCA) 2007 Summer Awards Ceremony.  The award is given “in recognition of a life spent swimming upstream.” Upon receiving the award, Father Adams said, “This is truly an honor coming from an organization that we have partnered with and has helped SOME tremendously, obtaining grants for renovations to the dental clinic and in so many other ways”  The DC Primary Care Association is a nonprofit health care reform organization founded in 1997 to improve the health of DC’s vulnerable residents by ensuring that they receive high quality primary health care regardless of their ability to pay.

4.  Did You Know…

that 120 senior citizens from the District are at SOME’s Senior Summer Camp vacation this week and next for much-needed rest, relaxation, and fun?  The oldest senior is 101, and several seniors are in their 90s.  There is still time to make a donation to send a senior to camp.  The cost per senior for one-week at the camp is $225.  Any size contribution would be most welcome.
